Once alerted to an oncoming storm take the following steps:
- Monitor radio or television for emergency information. Listen to NOAA Weather Radio or to commercial radio or television newscasts for the latest information.
- If you lose power use a hand-cranked or battery-powered radio to keep up on the latest information.
- If in a high-rise building, be aware that winds are stronger at higher elevations
- Avoid elevators.
- Lie on the floor under a sturdy table, desk, or other sturdy object for protection from broken windows or other debris.
- Be aware that if there is a lull, it could be the eye of the storm – winds may pick up again.
- Do not touch downed power lines or objects in contact with downed lines. Report electrical hazards to emergency responders.
Cooperate fully with emergency responders and public safety officials
