During periods of drought, be alert to smoke or other signs of a fire. Report any such sightings as soon as possible to public safety officials.

Contact the local fire department, health department, or forestry office for information on fire laws and procedures, and areas that are wildfire risks in the area. Then take the following steps:

  • Post fire emergency telephone numbers prominently in and around the work facility.
  • Ensure adequate accessibility by large fire vehicles to your property.
  • Create a 30 to 100 foot safety zone around your facility.  Clear all flammable vegetation, debris, or rubbish.
  • Ensure emergency kits include fire safety supplies are fully stocked with non-outdated materials.
  • Establish, document, and periodically review facility shutdown guidelines, procedures, and notifications.
  • Prepare and prominently post multiple escape routes in the event that an evacuation is necessary.
  • Once notified of the danger of a wildfire, close outside vents, windows, doors, etc.
  • Close all doors inside the facility to prevent draft.
  • Shut off any natural gas, propane or fuel oil supplies at the source.
  • Listen to radio or television newscasts for latest information on wildfire warnings.
  • If advised to evacuate, do so immediately.
  • Watch for changes in the speed and direction of the wind and fire.
  • Be alert to changes in the direction of smoke, and seek alternate escape routes if necessary.
